MESSAGE FROM THE MODERATOR Thank
you for bearing with me these past few months. Recovering from a bout with the shingles as been quite an
ordeal. Special thanks to Council chairs and their committee members for their commitment
of time and energy in behalf of HIC. On
March 25th, we celebrated the life of John Uyeda and on April 18th the lives of Yo Fujimoto and Laurel
Doiwchi. They personified the HIC spirit in so many ways – they leave us with fond memories.
On Palm Sunday, March 27th, we welcomed into Church membership Niecie
Ching, Brian Maneja, and Aurelio Perez. Hallelujah!! We are truly blessed with their
commitment to strength the mission of HIC. --Lloyd Ishimaru
POTPOURRI FOR MAY
PAAM SUNDAY
We had a very nice PAAM Sunday. During the service, we noted all the donations of flowers that decorated the altar. We even had
artifacts depicting the Hawaiian theme including a figurine of King Kamehameha, the pottery of a Japanese
figurine, a string of little origami birds that Joanie made and strung up, also she had printed out welcome words in all the
Asian languages. Many of the people had put in lots of thoughts and came up with these decorative ideas to enhance the celebration
of PAAM Sunday. We were made aware of the many Asian backgrounds we have in our
congregation and many diversities in the other United Church of Christ worshippers as well. The variety of Asian dishes was
abundant with lots of good flavors from the good cooks we have in our midst and of course enjoyed by all. Just
to mention some of the sampling dishes were Spam Musubi, delicious Filipino Pancit Malabon, an abundance of chowmein, chicken
wings, chicken morsels, macaroni salad, chirashi, desserts and to top it off Neapolitan ice cream was served.
Everybody lopped their large plate with heaping samplings of all the delicious entrees. And as usual, June Minami was serving hot tea to everyone.
APRIL 18th
After worship service on April 18th, we had
a short memorial service for our dear friends Laurel Doiwchi and Yo Fujimoto. Both have passed away recently.
Some of us do not know Laurel very well so Pastor Varga had anyone who wished to speak about Laurel do so.
First of all, Wendy relayed the message that Laurel’s mother thanked all of us for being so kind to her daughter
and she sent flowers for this occasion as well. When cousins, Lloyd Ishimaru or Landa Ikeda
needed to remember a date, time, and names of relatives, or an event that took place years ago, they would just ask Laurel
who was a walking encyclopedia of facts and figures and she would come up with the needed information.
The two people that were affected by Laurel’s passing were Judy Cashell and Aurelio Perez! Yoshio
Fujimoto, whom we all affectionately addressed as “Yo” passed away at his daughter’s home up north.
Yo was 94 years old. As his health declined, he could not be living alone in Alhambra,
so he and his daughters agreed that he should move in with the family. It was a good decision. Yo was the gentlest
person on earth. He had many talents and passion and one of them was he was a landscape painter.
Hiro Abe recalled how he would go and pick up Yo for a game of golf. They would have a four-some
and Hiro was the youngest of the group. Today, Hiro is 88 years young. Hiro would always
say that Yo lived Christ like! Some comments brought chuckles like when Yo called Adeline Manzo to describe
about his dryer that is not working well. Adeline went to his condo and found that the lint was 2 inches
thick! No wonder the air couldn’t circulate and dry the clothes!!! After the lint
was removed, the dryer was working effectively well….thanks to Adeline. Yo also came to church every
Sunday morning early to check the wick on the candles on the altar table. When the wick was too short,
he would change to a new candle. He took this responsibility very seriously. After
Yo moved away, he assigned Hiro to take over this important task which Hiro is still doing today.
BIO FOR
LAUREL DOIWCHI
A short bio of Doiwchi was
submitted by Wendy Fukuda. Laurel certainly had an interesting life. Laurel was born
on June 3, 1941. She was interned at Amache, Colorado with her parents, Miyoko and Kyo Doiwchi.
After the war she was raised in Washington State, San Francisco and Los Angeles. She loved to travel
and spent time in England as a nanny and took classes in art in Japan. Laurel worked in the clerical field
for J. W. Robinson and Princess Cruises. While working for the Princess Cruise lines, she was able to go
on many cruises which she enjoyed. Laurel attended several churches in the Los Angeles area and settled
down at HIC for approximately the past 15 years. Laurel is survived by her mother Miyoko Carter and cousins
Landa Ikeda and Lloyd Ishimaru. We all miss her very much. UYEDA FAMILY
We are grateful and thank Eric and Marilyn Uyeda for bringing
a yumpcious luncheon for us at the church to thank us for having his father’s service at the church. This was a surprise luncheon and it was a wonderful fellowship with Eric and Marilyn joining us.
This was a double treat for us. We wish to thank Eric and Marilyn for their generosity.
They always think of us and we appreciate them too. Please take care of your mother Louise. AURELIO PEREZ Because we have not seen Aurelio for about three Sundays,
we were concerned about him and it turned out that the house he is living in is now being put on the market. Aurelio
has been showing the home to prospective buyers and has been more or less homebound out of necessity. On
top of that, his health has been an issue and he is monitoring his health more closely.
As soon as the decision on the house is made, he will be back with us as soon as possible, in the meantime, he is committed
to the owners of house for showing the house. OLD TIMERS
Lloyd Ishimaru, once again gathered all of his old compadres on April 17th for a fellowship of friends from
years ago. When they were single they gathered together for fun and fellowship and now that they are seniors!!!!,
I can’t believe they are senior citizens…senior citizens are a group of people in their middle ages!!!!...anyhow,
they even had Archie Amate join them, They enjoy some more good delicious food as they share their
stories and compare notes on their health issues as well. This is one good happy group of people who gather
annually. Thanks to Lloyd who has been the glue for this young group of people.
And a big thank you to this group for their generous donation for using the church facility for
their meeting. CHRISTIAN ED FUNDRAISER Wendy Fukuda is
spearheading this special fund raising effort for scholarship fund to Pilgrim Pines. We have children who
are interested in attending summer camp at Pilgrim Pines. Toward this effort, Wendy has chosen a cookie
sale. So bakers, get your spoon ready to make that special batter for cookies to be sold on Mother’s
Day. This year, Mother’s day is May 9, 2010.
Cookies can be brought to church on that day and will be sold by the dozen. The cookies can be mix
and match as you prefer. This is for a worthy cause and the children will remember summer camp with emphasis
on fellowship and Christian values as well. You can
let Samantha Martinez know you are bringing cookies. The Christian Ed Board is thankful and grateful to
you for contributing toward this effort.
CHRISTIAN ED BOARD THANK YOU
The CE board thanks Shari and Kenny Nishi for the donation of a personal copier for the office.
The former copier has not been behaving properly lately so the new copier came to us in the right time!!!
Thank you ever so much.
RON TAKARA
We
received word that Ron who recently suffered a mild heart attack is now at home resting comfortably and watching his diet
intake. Donna who has not been too well either has double duty now as dietician and caregiver.
Perhaps son, Brian, oversees the whole process! Please take care, Your family is
in our thoughts and prayers as you recover.
BROADCASTER Done something interesting recently? Want to tell everyone? Then let us publish it in the Broadcaster

GOD IS STILL SPEAKING
On February 12, 2006,
Harold and Ellen Kameya dedicated a huge GOD IS STILL SPEAKING banner which Harold made at his shop. . It was
a work of art! Harold brought his own tools, ladder, drill, and hammer and while hanging the huge banner on the church building,
he looked across the street and noticed that the original banner on the CE bldg looked so tired, that he repositioned the
old banner so it looked fresh again.
